Create a REAL measure in Voyager

Hi collegues !

I'd like to create a real "Measure" in Voyager. It means that I don't want to use the standard features that creates a measure directly in the table of figures I retrieve from the data source (automatic sum function for instance).

In fact, it has to be exactly as you can do in an Universe: you create a real measure that will be added to the measures that already exists in the datasource: the formula of this measure is parsed and sent to the datasource first and then the result is imported in the front-end tool you are using.

I don't want to import the Data from the datsource and then, on the basis of this data that is in Voyager, use am automatic function that calcultates what I want to do...

Thank you very much!

Meryll

Hi Meryll

You don't mention what OLAP Provider you are using but it sounds like what you want is for the measure to be part of the cube.... and this can be done but it is not an end-user action. The cube administrator would have to do this for you and they can optionally add writes so that only you, or elected others, can only see this measure.

When added to the cube, Voyager will treat this new measure just like any other measure.

Hi Meryll,

I guess you cannot create a real measure in Voyager.

What could be done is to create a measure with the specified function on the cube level. i.e. During the time of the creation of the cube. After processing the cube this could be used in the the Voyager for reporting.

Could you also give us some examples or cases where you need to create a real measure for Voyager.

Thanks,

Hallo Boudhaditya (I hope it is your first name),

Thanks for the Answer.

An example of the "Real Measure" could the "EBIT" (Earning Before Interest and Taxes): You have in the Cube the hierarchy for many losses and wins. The EBIT is a mixture of this costs and Wins.

I don't want to have to create a table, in wich each time I have to show all the losses and wins in order to be able, at the very end, to calculate the EBIT.

I want to define the EBIT just one time: and use it in every Voyager Workspace I further create (of course if the cube I'm connecting with contains the data that are necessary to calculate the EBIT).

I hope it helps,

Meryll

Hi Meryll,

In that case you can create a favorite groups in Voyager. The button for Creating Favorite groups is present in the toolbar of the MDE of Data Pane. You need to first select all the members of costs in the MDE of datapane and save them as cost favorite group. Similarly for wins you need to select all the members of Wins and save them as wins.

You can make use of this favorite group in your report instead of filtering them from the Hierarchy.

Next time when you use this connection for making reports you can make use of this favorite groups instead of using the Hierarchy or the entire dimension which is a mixture of both costs and Wins.

These favorite group are connection specific and just need to be created once.

Hope this helps your purpose.

Hello,

I understand what you mean, but what I'd like to save aren't the losses and wins structure that are necessary in order to calculate the EBIT... but the EBIT itself, so that I could re-use it every time.

In the "EBIT" formel, there are already all the references to these losses and wins, that are necessary to enable to calculate the Ebit... I should be able to drag and drop only the Ebit in my Voyager Table and the result would be calculate... without importing once again the all costs and wins structure...

Sincerly yours,

Meryll

Hi,

I guess you are draging the EBIT to your slice to get the consolidates result. Here you need to drag only the favorite group to the slice which will show the individual results.

Here you needn't to import once again as you have already created it.

I'll try it asap and give you a feedback!
