I have just installed Crystal Reports 2008 on my computer. I have Oracle Developer Suite 10g also installed. However, when I go into Crystal Reports, it does not give me the option to make an Oracle connection. I also using TOAD and it is working fine. Any suggestions?

Oracle configuration issue

Hi Thomas,

Try going back into the installer using Add/Remove programs and modify the database connections list. By default we don't install everything. Select Oracle Native, ODBC and OLE DB if they have not been installed already.

If installed you'll see Oracle Server which is our native driver and then in ODBC you need to create a System DSN and then OLE DB which also needs the client installed.

If you download the Data Direct drivers there is also a Wired Oracle driver in which case the client is not required to be installed.

If they have then it's possible we can't find the Oracle Client. You do need to install it and their \bin folder MUST be in the PATH statement for CR to find it.

If still no list you may need to re-boot so those updates take affect.

Thank you

I have installed all of the available data connections. I have verified that the bin folder for oracle is in the path and it still does not provide a connection option to connect to oracle. I have uninstalled CR, deleted all registry keys and user files and resinstalled it and I still don't have oracle as a choice. Any other ideas?

What version of Crystal reports 2008 are you using, Basicm Pro, etc.?

Can you create a DSN to Oracle and then see if you can use ODBC to connect?

Has this issue been resolved? If so, can someone tell me how it was resolved, since I am having the same issue. I have downloaded CrystalReports for a 30-day evaluation however, I have not been able to start the evaluation since we would want to use it with Oracle and I can't seem to get that option, though I chose to install it.

One other question: Do you have to have Oracle installed on my local machine for this or can you just reference an Oracle database on another server? What, if anything, is required to be installed on my local machine along with Crystal Reports in order to use the Oracle data source option.

Thanks.

Hi Brenda,

CR requires the Oracle client be installed, you do this from the client install in one of the Oracle folders.

There is also an option if you download the Datadirect ODBC drivers from our web site. It has a driver that is called "Wired... " and it does not require the Oracle client be installed I believe. In that case you select the ODBC driver options in CR and you should see the Wired driver when adding a new System DSN.

Other than that you may want to search Oracles site, they may have had problems with this install.

Thanks again

Don,

I have now installed the Oracle Client, uninstalled Crystal Reports and reinstalled it again, and I still do not get the Oracle option in the data sources. I had a co-worker install the software the same way I did and they do get the Oracle option. However, this person may have other Oracle software on their machine as well.

Is there anything else required to be installed? This is preventing me from being able to evaluate the software to decide if it meets our needs.

Thanks

I found this on another website. Does it help any of us? I won't know if it helps me until I get an Admin to log into my computer.

Also for me, I can do an ODBC-ORACLE connection, but I have 250 reports written for oracle and I don't want to set location on all of them. Plus it means I have to have two versions of each report which is just a nightmare.

Oracle and Crystal 10 user access.????

To Whom may provide any help.... I have installed Crystal Reports 10 Advanced Developer and Oracle Runtime on a users computer. He is an avid user of a system called Datastream. When he goes into Crystal Reports to create a new connection, the option "ORACLE SERVER" is not in his list of options. BUT, if I make him an Admin on the PC he can access the "ORACLE SERVER". I have made sure he is a poser user on the PC, as well as the folders that I am aware of for Crystal, that he has full permission on those. I have created the ODBC Connection with my Admin rights, and then with his "Temp" Admin rights. Again, when I take his Admin rights away, he cannot access the "ORACLE SERVER" selection under create new connection. Anyone have ideas? I am stuck.. I tried to contact Crystal, but they cannot provide support(cuz out company will not buy support) BLAH BLAH BLAH!!

I also just installed the DataDirect ODBC drivers to see if that method might work. After installing them, I try to create a DSN, however Oracle does not appear as an option there either.

I had similar problem with ODBC also. It would not see oracle servers until I went into the oracle client and created a brand new connection with a different name. Then the ODBC ORACLE was in the list. Just the new connection though.

After four hours of trying things, we finally decided to go into Oracle installation software. We installed everything that we could. We originally installed as an admin, but then went to custom install and installed the remaining items. Not sure which one helped us. Immediatley after that we had oracle server as an admin or a user. Hope this helps for you.

Hi Mike and Brenda,

Thank you for all the testing you have been doing. I wasn't aware that Oracle limited access to only Admin groups or what part you installed that would cause the limitations. I would check with Oracle and ask them what is required, their install Doc's may provide help also.

This is out of the scope of CR support but here's a few things to look at and or test. SAP takes no responsibility for this and is for information purposes only.

AND THE USUAL WARNING ABOUT MODIFY REGISTRY KEYs. BACKUP, do only on a TEST PC's etc...

One thing you can check is using regedt32 and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE

This version of registry editor allows you to set permissions on registry keys. Right click on the key and select Permissions. Compare before and after the user has admin rights or to test try adding that user full permissions.

I'll mark this post as answered

Thanks again
