Serial numbers can be managed only if base unit of measure is discrete

While creating Serial Number Profile i am getting the following msg "Serial numbers can be managed only if base unit of measure is discrete", is it not possible to create Serial no. profile when the Unit of measure is EA or FT basically with some dimensions?
