Sales unit in Profitability analysis


Hi All

I have a sales quantity value field in my operating concern. But I am ambiguous about "sales unit" (Each/ KG). Is that a charecteristic?. And does it come standard or Do I have to create one?...Please throw some light on how this sales unit (each/ KG) works?.

Also How do we plan sales quanity, does SAP always takes base unit of measure as sales unit when you are planning
