Crystal Reports XI Install from crxir2_sp4_full_build purchased on SAP site

Hi Folks,

I'm having trouble installing the CR XI version that I recently purchased online. I tested this install successfully on a standalone laptop which has XP Professional 2002 SP2 on it with no restrictions on Internet access (except for std firewalls etc) and it appears to be working without problem.

When I tried to install Crystal Reports XI on the desired networked work desktop, where I have admin rights, I was able to select the language and run through the install to the stage where it asks to reboot. After I have rebooted and logged back into the network, I receive the following message:

"This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer package."

It appears as though the application is installed but the standard menu items have not been added to the Start|All Programs| list as in my test install and no icons have been added. The only way I can access the application is by selecting the crw32.exe file from the C:\Program Files\Business Objects\Crystal Reports 11.5 directory. When I do this, I am unable to open any reports, including new blank or sample reports.

I tried to uninstall using the Add/Remove Programs functions, however the applications are not listed here. I then deleted the Business Objects directory and all subdirectories and tried to reinstall again, but with the same result.

The downloaded install file has been placed on the root of the C Drive and it is being installed to the C Drive in C:\Program Files. I am logged into our network and have administrator rights to the desktop. We have successfully installed other applications on this desktop also. I don't believe there are any other versions of CR on this desktop, based on file searches to confirm.

We have then tried downloading a new Windows Installer file from the web in case a corruption was the problem, but with no luck either and always getting the same message after rebooting and logging in. Is there a specific Windows Installer version we should be using?

Any suggestions on what could be causing this problem and how I can get this to install successfully on my networked XP 2002 SP2 desktop would be appreciated? I'm pulling my hair out and would really appreciate some suggestions on what to look for.

Does the installation require unrestricted Internet access and if so, which sites does it connect to and what does it need to connect to the web for as I'll likely need to provide this detail to get increased access?

I look forward to your feedback.

Thanks in advance,

JCP

Well I've found my own answers and I hope that the below information might be of assistance to anyone else having trouble installing Crystal Reports XI R2 SP4 on a desktop within their managed network....and I didn't need to rebuild the OE.

I believed the issue had something to do with the configuration of our OE, even though the settings appeared the same as my standalone laptop, as I was receiving the below message after the installation process requested a restart "This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer package."

As the install progressed, I choose to manually restart later when prompted and I used Start|Run with services.msc to access the Windows Installer services. I double clicked on the Windows Installer application and selected the Recovery tab. At the First Failure drop down, I selected the Restart the Service option, so when I manually restarted the desktop and the Windows Installer application failed, it then restarted the process and successfully completed the Crystal Reports installation.

As my install was all run from a single exe file downloaded from the SAP website, when the install haltered and before I restarted, I also copied all of the installation files from within the crxir2_sp4_full_build install file to a new directory and ran the install from that location rather than the downloaded file. I don't think this had an impact, but thought I'd list it just in case.

Good luck all!
