General Question: New To SAP and SAP Web Channel 2007

I'm very new to SAP and SAP Web Channel 2k7. I have a decent amount of Java experienced, but I'm having a hard time understanding the SAP API. Namely, how to interact with the catalog. I'm looking to accomplish some pretty basic tasks such as, pull product information out of the catalog and display the root level categories in the catalog.

I'm very much in the learning phase here, but if someone could point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it.
