What's the role of the Transformation?

I have gone thru the help and got the following notes

You can define data transformations so that you can map external data to internal Business Planning and Consolidation data structures. Data Manager helps you set up data import and export into and out of your BPC applications.

But still not clar

In my application if I have 5 dimensions Time (ID ), Category(ID), Entity(ID), Account(ID) & Sales(SalesID -)

If my application data looks like below

(col1) (col2) (col3) (col4) (col5) (col6)

Timevalue Categoryvalue Entityvalue Accountvalue salesvalue signeddata

Now how to build the transformation file
