Shutting plants down in SAP

What can anyone share about their experiences and steps to "deactivating" a PLANT in sap. Were on ECC 5.0 and we have a number of plants no longer in service after 10 years and we need to clean them up and lock them down as well as ensure ready to archive. Anyone whose done this and willing to share their steps?
