Question about integration with other system such as DMS

Hi

How can SAP B1 be integrate with another system such as DMS (Document Management System)? Do I need B1iSN to integrate with DMS? Can I connect directly to the SAP B1 database, so I can use the data for the other system? What kind of database that SAP B1 use?
