I give below some example
Supposing if you create cost centers as individual departments and if you have more than one plant having the same department, you will be having naming convention as 1adm and 2adm for two plants administration department. If you want to know the Administration expense across plants, then you need to include both the cost centers and arrive at the expenses. Instead in both the cost centers if you have the functional area updated as ADMN then by giving this itself you will be able to arrive at the administration expenses. This example which I have given is at the micro level. If you consider a big organisation having so many plants with so many departments, you can visualise the usage of Functional Area.

You can check the report where ever you have field FKBER you can get values with functional area in that report.
