regarding Server patterns

HI guys,

Could you guys tellme what are the Merits and demerits in installing SAP/DB in different pattern as follows

1) SAP/DB in one box

2) ABAP/DB in one box and JAVA/DB in another box

3) Installing all instances(CI/DI etc) seperately

Have any document related to this..explaining about this
