Lumira 2.0 vs SAP Analytics Cloud - Future direction for clients

Hi All,

Considering the fact that SAC is the future direction of SAP's reporting strategy, and having worked on SAC for a client now, I had a few questions from a solution standpoint.

What should one propose to the client as reporting strategy (if they have no existing licenses)? SAC seems to be the clear answer but having worked on this tool and also on lumira + design studio (or Lumira 2.0) , I realized that SAC isn't as powerful (at least not yet) .

Now I am in a dillemma where I see that SAC is better long term but Lumira 2.0 is much more powerful in terms of capabilities.

Future promise vs Current Capabilities - How do I decide and justify this decision?

For the sake of this argument, assume a landscape with S4HANA and BW4/Enterprise HANA.

Looking forward to a healthy discussion.

Are you looking at utilizing Lumira Designer or Discovery, or both?

Both actually.

We were basically in the same boat, needed to start a project with a tight deadline for a large customer with executive level stakeholders. In the end, we chose Designer/Discovery. Lessons learned:

I wouldn't suggest investing time in Lumira Discovery. I've had several issues with this software and the response from support is to move to SAC as they are no longer making any changes to the discovery client. Whereas SAC, their release schedule is frequent and you can at least submit ideas on the influence site for this product. Discovery is the route we took for one of our clients only due to tight deadlines. Parallel to this we also ran a POC in SAC, and found that SAC capabilities still weren't up to meet the functionality we were using in Designer. SAC still continues to be a non-viable solution for us at this time (for replacement of the Discovery client).

(As a side note, we're actually contemplating on going back to Xcelsius as the customer liked the look and feel and performance of those dashboards much better than in Discovery.)

If your customer has a project with immediate needs and a deadline and stringent requirements, probably best to go with Designer. They must also understand that any new functionality they will need that doesn't exist will not be able to be accomplished as there's no more investments here.

If they're willing to negotiate on some of the requirements knowing that improvements will be coming along the way (with a refrequent painless release cycle), then I would encourage you to push them to SAC and make due with what you can and actively participate in the influence site.

There was also supposed to be a hybrid license model coming out in H2 2018. If this was already available, this may make your decision a lot easier as well, but I haven't heard anything on this since this spring.

Hi Shyam,

Honestly, i think you've answered your own question!

I'd disagree mildly with the position Lumira 2.0 that's it's "much more powerful". Yes it's enterprise-proven and highly customise-able.

But - for example - Lumira can't Plan + Predict in the same Analytical tool; isn't Cloud-first, and can't run a Boardroom agenda.

So for a new client would you agree that SAC would be the recommendation as compared to Lumira 2.0?

Most definitely.

in this day and age, i can't imagine a 'net new name' (i.e. customer) to an SAP BI project really wanting to entertain the idea of having to: size, provision, install, configure, patch and maintain an on-premise server installation cluster. ( then ontop of that, develop and deliver content to users.- this last piece at least stays the same! )

The main question is whether your customer is looking for a roadmap-driven tool, in that case, definitely SAC. If there is an immediate need for something that SAC doesn't do you can also consider a hybrid approach.

Additionally, I tend to agree with Henry in regards to Lumira offering more than SAC.
