Top level navigation is not getting loaded for some users

Former Member

Hi All,

We are on EP7.0 SP15 portal and are experiencing an issue with the top level navigation for portal users.

The top level navigation is not getting loaded when the user logs into the portal. This is only happening to some users and without any resettting or anything it is automatically getting corrected after sometime. The issue is happening in D, S and Q system very regularly. After the login the page loads with only the home tab on though the users are assigned different portal roles.

Do anyone know the root cause and why is it happening rarely?

Thanks for your time!

Madhavi

We have seen this problem. Out of thousands of users, only reported by a handful of people (less than 10), but affects these people frequently and means they cannot access SAP functionality under the required roles in the TLN.

Have found that refreshing page rarely works.

Closing and restarting browser rarely works.

We have several different entry points to the SAP portal from our intranet pages, and always seems that the first most convenient route never works, but navigating through intranet to another SAP portal link does seem to work. Weird.

Significantly all the users who have reported the problem have been laptop users. Even though laptops make up small percentage of user base. Has been mentioned that problem might be as a result of missing Service Pack or Security Updates for Windows / Interent Explorer, but as yet unable to determine what if anything is missing on users machines.

Have seen user consistently missing TLN on their machine but log on to somebody else laptop and TLN is always visible which would point more to a clinet issue. (Window XP and IE 6)

Does anyone have any further information on this?

Hi,

We have upgraded our portal to 7.01 SP5 version and after that we couldnt see this happening again in any of the portal environments. So I think the upgrade resolved the issue.

Hello Kiran,

That is what our problem was. The whole TLN was missing (intermittently). After following the note instructions the Note the problem was gone. Sorry if it didn't work for you.

Hello Paul,

Unfortunately, we are on 2004s SP15 (7.0 sps15) and this issue happens quite frequently for some users. We are applying EHP1 and are watching if the issue appears again.

The note says that this happens for 2004s SP8-10 and that the issue is fixed since SPS11.

WIll update if I don't see this issue happening again.

Hello All,

I have found the fix for the problem I mentioned here. Please read SAP Note 1002832. Maybe this will rid you of the mentioned error as it has for us.

Paul,

Thanks for replying. I read the note and it talks about "Missing roles in the Top Level Navigation" which is different from the issue being discussed. The issue we are discussing is "Missing TLN", the TLN is not displayed at all. The first page you land is shown with the masthead but no "tab bar". The issue disappears after a few browser refreshes.

Hello All,

I have a 7.0 SPS 19 Portal which is giving me the same problem "Intermittent TLN loss for various users". Did anyone find a solution to this problem? I would greatly appreciate a note about the solution.

Thanks in advance

We applied EHP1 on both our Consumer and Producer portals and this issue still happens sometimes and more frequently for a few users. We are using IE6. Our Consumer portal is tied to AD and the producer's UME is pointing to BW ABAP stack.

SAP suggested hot patches and those didn't help either. I wonder if its a client thing. But the users who face this issue don't see this happening if they go directly to the BI Producer portal. Not sure what's causing this.

Thanks for your time,

Kiran

Do you mean you are assigning roles dynamically to users at logon time? If so, is this being done directly or through group assignment? If it's by group assignment, this is not always consistent - the UME tries to cache this information and will only read group memberships at logon time.

No, I am not assigning roles dynamically to users at logon time... the roles are preassigned but somehow when we login with the user id it is loading only the home page and not loading any roles in the Top level navigation.

I am also using FQDN http:// ........./irj/portal only not the ip address.... this problem shows up suddenly and will be existing for a period of time and automatically getting reset after sometime....

Thanks,

How users are assigned to the roles

like users ->group and this Group to role

if it is the case then... check whether users are changing in the group dynamically or not... can you confirm that

Again I am able to duplicate the issue and when we see at the bootom of the page there is a javascript error icon and when I double click on that icon....

the error 'gNavTree' is undefined is thrown.... Any ideas why do we get this error. No changes are made to the Portal.

Thanks,

Madhavi

Do you have multiple server processes? If so, when you setup UME did you do this with the config tool? Maybe it works on some server nodes and not others?

What is your UME source?

Do you have a customized portal desktop and/or framework page? What browser are you using?

Hi Michael,

Yes there are multiple server processes and we used config tool to setup UME.

The UME source is ADS.

The user logs in using the http://...../irj/portal that loads the default desktop framework and the browser we are using is IE7.

Thanks for your time!

I assume you've logged a formal call with SAP about this?

Can you see if it happens only if the user is on specific server nodes? When it fails a user, so they need to logoff the portal before it works, or will a ctrl-F5 cache refresh work?

What sort of iView is on the home page? Is it a URL iView?

Hi Madhavi,

Request you to check with the IE 6.0 Version.

We have seen this issue happen randomly in our installation too. We can't reproduce this issue when we want to. Our version is 7.0 SPS15. This happens roughly a couple of times in a month where the Portal is accessed by thousands of people numerous times.

To describe the issue - I believe the EPCM Javascript builds and renders the Top Level Navigation bar. Sometimes what happens is, the bar doesn't display but what ever the content area page displays still gets rendered. So, you see the Masthead (with logoff/personalize links) and the content page. Since you don't see the TLN, you can't navigate to a different tab. The only log is the IE browser's bottom left javascript error. The way we told users to resolve is to hit refresh their window and it usually goes away.

We logged a ticket with SAP but they ask for HTTP Watch Trace logs but since we can't reproduce I don't know how we can collect that.

Thanks & Regards,

Kiran

check if the missing role has the "entry point" with the option "Yes"

Thanks for the reply. I checked the entry point and it is set to 'YES'. And the problem is it not happening everytime..... only sometimes the Top level navigation is not getting loaded even though the user is assigned to that role. And after sometime without any changes made it is automatically loading the Top level navigation.

Madhavi,

Try using the FQDN instead of IP address.

http://<FQDN>:<portnumber>/irj/portal

Hope this helps.
