Maximum stripes in sybase ASE/IQ dump

Hi All,

What is the logic behind creating the stripes in Sybase ASE backups ?

How many stripes we can create for a single dump, I mean is there any calculation or recommendation over there ?

How stripes are helpful in realtime scenarios ?

Please throw some light on above points.

Thanks and reagrds

Pankaj

    Hello,

The calculation for the maximum number of stripes can be found here:

    http://infocenter.sybase.com/help/topic/com.sybase.infocenter.dc31644.1600/doc/html/san1371158756496.html

I think you will also want to pay close attention to the backup shared memory setting here as I have seen this have a large impact on performance:

    http://infocenter.sybase.com/help/index.jsp?topic=/com.sybase.infocenter.dc31644.1600/doc/html/san1371158752434.html

Having multiple stripes allows backup server to read/write from multiple files as opposed to a single file.

When setting stripes, I would also pay attention to the number of CPUs. I have seen that setting the number of stripes greater than or equal to the number of available CPUs degrades performance. I think setting the number of stripes to something less than the number of available CPUs leaves room for the operating system to do its work.

    Thanks,

    Neal
