Maximum number of fields allowed in MDM

Just wanted to know is there any real restriction on the number of fields that can be actually added to the main table in the MDM repository. Currently we have about 120 odd fields but if we look at the entire repository including all the lookup tables there are a little more than 250 fields.

If no restriction on the actual number is there a limit after which the performance gets affected?
