Could you please let me know if anyone has an experience with managing the alphanumeric values for the Handling Units (External Identification VEKP-EXIDV) with Warehouse Management.
To me it sounds like a genuine business requirement from our client but somehow there is no ready solution available in SAP standard for this. There are very few (only a couple of) threads around this topic that I could find - but none of them could give a conclusive statement.
It looks like we can actually create the Handling Units with alphanumeric values (manually passing an alphanumeric value as an external number for the HU in the transaction HU02 for example) in SAP standard. But, when it comes to use such numbers in tandem with SAP WM (when system tries to treat such alphanumeric values as the Storage Units) - it throws errors.
There is also an SAP note that talks about using the alphanumeric values for the Storage Units but then that would be too big a change for the client - that too without really knowing if it would solve our issue or if it would lead us to another new set of issues.
Which is why I thought of floating this question to you experts. It would be great to learn about this from someone who has had any experience in this area.
