significance of material group

Hi All,

Can anyone help me listing out the significance/use of material group. I would like to know in what many ways the material group is interlinked to other SAP system.

Hi,

You can use Material Group logic while creating your external material master no range , so that you will get the Inventory Report based on material group for.e.g if you make Material Group as 2 Wheelers , then you can see the inventory of all 2 wheeler materials at a glance, if in material master you have mentioned Material group as 2 Wheeler , because in most of the inventory reports material group is used for Selection Criteria. (MC.L, MC.9, MC.A, MC.B etc ) .

Material group is used to group similar type materials.

You can get different type of reports based on the material group. How to maintain material groups is depend up on the client.

Path to create mateial groups;

SPRO: Logistic general --> material master --> settings for key fields --> define material group

Key that you use to group together several materials or services with the same attributes, and to assign them to a particular material group.

You can use material groups to:

Restrict the scope of analyses

Search specifically for material master records via search helps

external material groups

Key that you can use to assign the material to an external material group or to a material group determined according to external systematics.

u can check the settings for material group under the menu path:

SPRO > LOGISTIC GENERAL > MATERIAL MASTER > SETTINGS FOR KEY FIELDS > DEFINE MATERIAL GROUPS.

for service procurement u have to assign the valuation class with the material group:

SPRO > MATERIAL MANAGEMENT > PURCHASING > MATERIAL MASTER > ENTRY AIDS FOR ITEMS WITHOUT MATERIAL MASTER.

It is also useful in creating a PO without specifying a material; for example acoount assigned PO, where material group derives the GL account for posting..
