Business Objects 4.1 SP9 no middleware for OLE DB SQL Server 2016

We have a Business Objects BIP 4.1 with SP9 installation and we're upgrading our data sources from SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2016. The current connection to the database is a OLEDB connection (MS SQL Server 2008 --> OLE DB Providers). Now we want to do the same for our brand new SQL Server 2016 environment, but unfortunately we can't choose MS SQL Server 2016 --> OLE DB Providers when we want to add the connection.

What is the reason behind this? Are we forced to use ODBC or JDBC connections?

CR and BOE now require the MS SQL Server Native 11 Client to be used connecting to newer MS SQL Servers.

Install the MS Client, update your reports to use the Native 11 client and then it should all work for you.

The comment that Joe provided is exactly the reason why I had to ask this question in the first place. We've also tested the OLE DB Provider for the MS SQL Server 2014 and that seems to work when we connect to our SQL Server 2016 environment. Are there other people who have experience with this?

Check this KB. OLE DB support is deprecated by Microsoft. Moving forward you need to use ODBC connection.
