Testing a subreport field in the calling report when the field is null

Using Crystal 2008, v. 12, Sybase 11

I've got a report that incorporates one field from a subreport. Sometimes the subreport does not retrieve any data for the calling report's row and returns nothing. I need a way of determining this in the calling program, and I haven't had any luck. I have a formula in the subreport to format this field, and I've included the formatting needed for a 'not found' condition, but it doesn't seem to fire when there's no result.

So, I need a way to either

fill this field at the subreport level when there is nothing found, or query the subreport at the calling report level. I haven't figured out a way to do either. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks, Cheryl
