Issue in trial version installation for SAP HANA streaming analytics

Hello Experts,

I am trying to explore the SAP HANA streaming analytics with Express Edition to replace my existing legacy reporting and implement some predictive solution.

As directed by SAP, I have subscribed for 30 days trial pack and trying to access the system from virtual machine. However, I am facing issue in installing the hxe.ova (Server Only Virtual machine) file in VMWare workstation.

Issue: I am not able to test my XS Engine (Page 30 in the attached PDF) In the video, it’s used Server + application virtual machine was selected, where as I have selected the Server Only Virtual machine due to RAM limitation. I am not able to get the IP address with command /sbin/itconfig . As a result, I am not able to configure this in my host file.

Need your help to find the ip address so that I can start the XS Engine for next steps.

XSA is not included in the Server Only VM image (hxe.ova). To use XSA in HANA Express you need to use the Server + Apps VM image (hxexsa.ova). As you already noted the hxexsa.ova is a larger VM image and will require more resources to run.

I am able to run the hxexsa.ova image with HANA streaming analytics installed on my laptop with 16GB RAM. More memory is definitely beneficial, but as long as you have at least 16GB you should be able to run it.

How much memory do you have?

Hi Robert,

Thanks for your response. I have 8 GB RAM, that's why I am trying with the Server Only version (hxe.ova).

Is there any way I can use this and create a streaming project? I have memory constrain in my current system and upgrade will take some time.

Let me know what are my options.

You probably aren't going to have much success trying to run the VM on a machine with 8GB of RAM. It took a fair bit of work to get the HANA Express instance down to a size that could run on a machine with 16GB of RAM.

That said, you can try, just don't get your hopes up.

HANA streaming analytics is not dependent on XSA in any way. You can use the Server only VM and install HANA streaming analytics on top of that. When working through HANA Express setup tutorials, you want the non-XSA versions. If you haven't already seen it, then this blog post is a good starting point for using HANA streaming analytics in HANA express.
