AIX 7.1 Power8 processor SMT4 is good for SAP IQ 16.1

Dear Expert,

I got a question on p195 of “POWER7 and POWER7+ Optimization and Tuning Guide , An IBM Redbooks publication" ( .

It described "Sybase IQ start scripts set both AIXTHREAD_SCOPE=S and AIXTHREAD_MNRATIO=4;1. The latter overrides the former. The former is considered a starting point for systematic testing. IQ start scripts also set SPINLOOPTIME and YIELDLOOPTIME to 40 without any explanation."

Just would like to know if it is same behavior on IQ start scripts of "SAP IQ 16.1 for AIX" ?

BTW, if default SMT4 mode for AIX 7.1 Power8 is suitable for SAP IQ 16.1 ?

Please help to advise.

Thank you in advance.

Best Regards,

Robert Chu

    Dear Expert,

I thought I found the answer for my first question regarding IQ start scripts embedded with AIX environment parameters setting.

I checked IQ start scripts of both IQ15.4 and IQ16.1 and confirmed those setting are same as description on the IBM Redbook(“POWER7 and POWER7+ Optimization and Tuning Guide").

    /* grep from start_iq */

Regarding to my second question regarding to if AIX SMT4 is suitable for IQ 16.1 on AIX,

I searched support portal and only found one document regarding to "Optimizing Sybase® Adaptive Server® Enterprise (ASE) for IBM AIX"

( and it mentioned SMT setting and benchmark for SAP ASE rather than SAP IQ,

as I knew, ASE is used for OLTP application and IQ is used for OLAP application, it is totally different behavior for applications.

That is why I would like to get advice on which SMT mode is suitable for IQ 16.1 on AIX platform.

Any helpful comments will be very thankful.

    Thanks in advance.

    Best Regards,
