You can maintain special ledgers (or non-leading ledgers in New GL) in currencies other than those assigned to the company code in OB22 transaction. Hard currency is used in countries with high inflation. Brazil is one example I guess. Look for OY01 transaction to see if hard currency is maintained for the country in question.
