An invalid argument was encountered

Hi, I am trying to install Xcelsius on my Dell D600 Laptop.

1.6MHZ processor, plenty of Memory.

Windows XP

Every time I load Xcelsius Present 2008, and I have tried 3 times now, rebooting machine after each try,

When I try to open the program, I get a MS Windows XP error message, saying

u2018An invalid argument was encounteredu201D

With a click u2013 box saying u201COKu201D.

I click the OK and the box goes away, but Xcelsius still does not open. What am I doing wrong?

please tell me what to do, to open the program

thanks

Scott Olson

Hi Scott,

I think you may need to upgrade your Office. This link describes similar problem, hope it's helpful

A sales person from Xcelsius directed me to a ftp site, and I downloaded the file.

But when I run the file, the MS installer seems to hang up,

I get the following messages

MS prompt asks for language, I select English,

MS installer then has a click box with the following text:

u201COffice XP Application: Excel, Word, Outlook, or Powerpoint must be pre-installed, Higher Versions work fineu201D

I click OK,

And then another box opens up, and says,

u201CInstallation ended prematurely because of an erroru201D.

There is an OK box, I click OK, and the installer ends.

I am frustrated, yes. I also asked for an installation disk. This process works on another PC - another member of the family. It is just a problem with this Dell D600 Laptop.

I appreciate the help trying to solve, but it isn't quite fixed yet

margret, I have deleted that line and each time I do, and reload Xcelcius, the line seems to magically re appear the next time I go to the file and open it.

I have asked an Xcelcius sales person to send me a disc to load the program.

thanks for your help,

Hi Scott,

that's normal, but have you been able to start Xcelsius after deleting the key, or you still see the same message?

I hope the sales person helps - I think you need to install different version of MFC dlls, but I need to dig more to find out details. Hopefully reinstallation will fix the problem.

Margret, thanks for the help, I do have administrator priveleges; this is a personal pc with no enterprise or Corporate Pc applications on it.

Regarding your suggestion,

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Business Objects\Xcelsius\Recent File List

I did a file search for HKEY and Xcelsius, but could not find any file like this,

where is it located? Should it be in the c drive with a xcelsius file extension?

what is regedit?

Sorry, I am just a new user, not a MS expert,

thanks,

Hi Scott,

please press windows button "Start",select menu "Run", in the dialog type "regedit" (without quotes), press OK. It will open the registry editor. In the tree on the left find HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Business Objects\Xcelsius\Recent File List key, and delete it, then close the registry editor and start Xcelsius. Please let me know if it helps.

Do you have administrator privileges? Do you have several accounts on your laptop?

It's the first time I hear about the issue, seems to be related to the MFC dlls version and long file paths

http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=213556) . I searched online for the error message; some people report successful results from deleting recent file list from the registry, others from doing system restore. I would try to delete the recent file list:

open regedit and delete the key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Business Objects\Xcelsius\Recent File List

Please tell us if it helps.
