IQ 16.0 PITR and dependency chain

Dear all,

I've observed this on an IQ 16.0 SP 11.19 installation on Linux x86_64, a recent build of 16.0 where according to SAP Tech Support PITR is supposed to work.PITR logs are configured for automatic backup (IQ_LOG_BACKUP_INTERVAL = 29)

in SYSIQBACKUPHISTORY, there are only two records of type 5 (PITR) which do not point (via dependson_id) to another PITR record. It's the first two entries after PITR Backup had been set up, and they point to the previous FULL backup.. All subsequent PITR entries bild up two chains of records where dependson_id points to a previous PITR entry until the chains end at the two entries pointing to the FULL backup.

Does this mean that all those generated archives are required to perform a point in time restore? Or how can I identify the subset of necessary archives, based upont the availability of FULL / INCREMENTAL / ISF backups?

TIA

Hi Volker,
If I understand your query correctly - You will need to have all the PITR backups since the last Incremental Backup , until the point you want to recover. As is documented https://help.sap.com/viewer/a893f37e84f210158511c41edb6a6367/16.1.3.0/en-US/96d12034fdb64ae8843a508a...

"Always begin a point-in-time recovery by restoring a database from a full data backup, then apply all incremental backups prior to the point in time you want to recover"

You can use output from SysIQBackupHistory and SysIQBackupHistoryDetail to figure out which files would you need.

Hi Harpreet,

thank you very much for your response. I was aware of the doc you referenced, but somewhat confused about the dependson_id chains. Actually, the doc doesn't state which files are required, since only the directory name is passed to the RESTORE command. And for housekeeping, it is important to know which files I can purge without jeopardizing my PITR window.

Thanks again & best regards

Volker

I will make a doc request to get it clarified in our docs.
