Hi
Grouping of materials with similar attributes is material group
Suppose if you are manufacturing pen say three models
1.Ink pen
2.Ball point pen
3.Thorw away type (refill can not be changed) and club them in to say material group 10000 )
Tomorreow as a pricing condition you can have a discount of 1 % on this material group 10000 that means all these three will have the discount
But the individual prices of these three materials can differ
Mostly this is used as an element for taking reports in practical purposes
Say you are manufacturing 10000 materials and material groups are 100 for all these 10000 materials then how my group 001 behaves you can take such report
Group 002
From MM point of view in MMR this is a mandatory entry for most of the material types and used for report generation mainly
OMSF is the t code for creating material groups

Material group in Sales org- tab copied from Basic Data-1 tab of MMR- ( MARA_MATKL)
Eg:
If you take an Automobile Industry ( which am working currently) sector.
There are certain components which will be used specific Vehicles Such as 2/3/4 wheeler only *( because of the component specifications)
Material-X / Y / Z is used in 2 wheeler.
End of the Year, Client wants to know, Total sales category wise such as 2 wheeler / 3 wheeler & so on.
Then you can generate a Report with this Material Group.
( In material Master , for each component against this Material group has to mention in which Category this component is going to use, as i said above, one component will be used only those Vehicles which is manufactured for)
SAP has given some reserve fields to achieve this such as Material group 1 - 5 . instead this you can use this Material group.
hope it adds info

Dear Sunitha
The main purpose of this field is that based on this field, you can maintain pricing condition based on material group.
This means, you have some 50 products which are all under one family and all these products will have the same price, then in that case, you create a material group in IMG Path -- SD --> Basic Functions --> Pricing --> Maintain Price Relevant Master Data Fields --> Define Material Groups and assign the same to your all material codes.
Next go to V/07, select your pricing condition and click on Access. There to your right side, maintain table 030.
Next go to VK11, input your pricing condition type and maintain the price for the combination of Customer / Material Pricing Group.
With the above process, you simplify your datas by not maintaining pricing for each material; instead it is enough if you just maintain price for material group.
More importantly, you can also generate sales reports based on Material Groups.
