SAP SQL Anywhere 9 Compatibiliy

Former Member

Hi Experts.

Is SQL Anywhere 9 and Mobilink Server 9 still compatible with Windows Server 2016? I can't find it on this documentation: https://wiki.scn.sap.com/wiki/display/SQLANY/SAP+SQL+Anywhere+Supported+Platforms+and+Engineering+Su...

As Volker has already answered, I am just adding some comments.

The document link, while not stating specifically details for SQL Anywhere 9, does contain information that can be used to answer this question.

  • The Mainstream Maintenance section does indicate that Jan 31, 2010 was the end of mainstream support for SQL Anywhere 9. This is over 6 years prior to the release of Windows Server 2016.
  • Windows Server 2016 is first listed as supported in v12.0.1. Neither 11.0.1 nor 12.0.0 supported that version.

Based on that information, one could conclude that SQL Anywhere 9 did not support Windows Server 2016.

As this page evolves with new releases , older releases age out of the page. You can use Wayback Machine (Internet Archive) to get captures of the Supported Platforms page that includes version 9 - you will likely need to search sybase.com. Here is information I found for SQL Anywhere 9.0.2 (using an archived version of this page):

  • NT 4.0
  • 2000
  • XP
  • XP Embedded 1
  • XP Tablet PC Edition
  • Vista *
  • Windows Server 2003, 2008 (x86, x64, IA64) *
  • Windows Server 2008 R2(x64) **
  • Windows 7 **

  • *Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 are supported; however, some operations require administrative permissions and can only be performed when run as an administrator. For Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 configurations utilizing UAC, EBF #3476 or higher is required.
  • ** Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 requires EBF #3924 or higher.

Well, SQL Anywhere 9 has been EOL'ed early 2010, as you can see from the cited document in the "Mainstream Maintenance" section, so several years before Windows Server 2016 was introduced. That means it cannot be officially supported on that platform.

The oldest SQL Anywhere version with official Windows Server 2016 support is 12.0.1, which has also been EOL'ed in the meantime, namely end of 2016.

So you will need to use SQL Anywhere 16 or 17 to use a fully supported version.

That being said, in my experience older SQL Anywhere versions have usually run quite well on newer platforms, but that is something you have to find out yourself. In case you will face issues, well, then you won't get official support...
