How do you put images as background in the tabs in Top Level Navigation?

Hi all gurus!

I think the question in the subject row is quite straight forward: is there a way to put pictures as background in the tabs in the TLN, instead of just setting a color as you do in the Theme Editor?

Regarding this thread it is possible: Top Level Navigation Tabs

Also this thread mention this solution in a way: Top Level Navigation Customization

It says: "- the 'CSS hack' in the Theme Editor (use ';' in a existing entry to add new CSS styles that are not directly available in the theme)"

I downloaded the TLN par file, imported a gif and deployed the par file again and tied it to a new role, desktop and theme. Then I added the following string in the field "Background Color of Unselected Tabs" in the Top Level Navigation section in the theme editor:

;background:/irj/portalapps/com.sap.portal.navigation.toplevel.modified/images/gradient_white_grey.gif

The string is according to the first forum thread which I provided above but it doesn't work. Does anyone know if the possibility is removed in later versions of the portal? The mentioned thread is from 2006 and things could for sure have been altered since.

If there is other ways to use pictures instead of colors I would be most greatful to know. But it has to be regarding the "normal framework", we are not working with "portal light framework".

Best regards
