Editing XI reports with Crystal Designer 9

Hi,

I suspect that I already know the answer to my question, but it's always worth getting a second opinion.

I'm going to be upgrading our CE9 installation to BOE XI3.1 in the near future and have concerns as to whether I can still edit the Crystal reports in BOE XI3.1 with the Crystal Designer 9. My reason for wanting to be able to do this is that we currently have about 9 or 10 CE9 installations and it is not practicable to convert them all in one hit and so we'll end up on a mixed platform for a while.

I've tested the situation and find that I can connect to a BOE XI 3.1 FRS from CR9 and that it is possible to open a report to edit. A warning message is shown explaining that some features may not be available, but since the reports have only just been converted from CE9 there shouldn't be any unsupported features in them. It is also possible to make edits to the report template in CR9. During the save process I get a critical error stating that there problems attempting to communicate with the APS (not surprising really!) but the report does appear to be updated in BOE XI 3.1.

Longer term I hope to move our report design platform up to Crystal Reports XI to make use of the new features that are available, but due to licensing issues (not enough licences to deploy both versions at the same time) I can't do this untill we no longer have CR9 reports to support.

Question: Am I storing up trouble for myself in trying to edit reports held in BOE XI 3.1 with CR9 designers, or is this considered to be an acceptable approach?

Any thoughts or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Mike
