Functional and Technical Flow on Planned Independent Requirements in AFS

My client needs to understand the concept of Planned Independent Requirements in SAP AFS - 4.6c and in ECC 6.3.Can you please help me to understand the functional and techanical flow of PIRs in SAP.

Tha business process and the various tables and structures used.
