first of all I think that this is not really a DMS related issue based on the used transaction code FBL5N. So if possible you can add some screenshots for further clarification.
What is a good way to start for performance issue in the ERP sytsem is to create a performance trace using transation ST12 or SE30. This kind of trace provides background details which show what kind of coding parts consume most of the time. With this information it is always easier to search for notes for example. If still available in your system you can also use transaction ANST which also allows you to trace the whole process.
