Plant or storage location

Dear SAP experts,

I am in the process of analysing two separate processes which means a process for virtual goods where the goods are not physically in Plant but represent stock levels and the other process is for goods with physical stocks where the goods are physically stored and delivered to the end customer.

The question is should I have in the organisational structure two plants or one plant two strorage locations for virtual and physical stocks.

I look forward in your input and expertise.

Thanking you

Andy,

Unfortunately, the answer, as always, is 'it depends'.

You are usually safe using plants, since they accommodate a wider range of business requirements when compared to storage locations.

You must first perform the requirements analysis. Once you understand EVERY aspect of what the client needs, those requirements, along with your expert knowledge of SAP's standard functionality, will suggest the best solution. A good place to start is with a series of questions that you submit to the client. SAP has a nice starting point in their QandA database. These questions can be found by logging onto your company's copy of SAP Solution Manager. You can use transaction SQADB01 or just display the contents of table SQADB01 using SE16.

For what it's worth, it is wise to urge your client to avoid anything 'virtual'. SAP has enough functionality to provide solutions for just about any normal business scenario, without creating 'virtual' stock that doesn't really exist.

Hi Andy

You have two scenarios.

1) A process for virtual goods where the goods are not physically in Plant but represent stock levels :-

Here, in your organisation structure, you can have one plant and a storage location wherein the stocks will be stored in blocked storage location. In this case, the stocks cannot be accountable for that plant but can be seen in blocked stock and represnt stock level.

2) For goods with physical stocks where the goods are physically stored and delivered to the end customer.

Here in your organisation structure, you can define two plants one is your company and another as customer location. ie Material is available at Customer location but billed via your location.
