Hi community,
We are doing an Oracle upgrade from 8.1.7 to 9.2 on SAP R/3 Release 4.6C on Unix AIX
We shortly noticed that after db upgrade, SAP kernel must be upgraded too, because kernel current version is not compatible with the new Oracle version, as shown by command "disp+work -V in the supported environment section of the output list
My question is: why this is not reported on the (veryvery detailed) upgrade manual or in the numerous sap notes listed in the manual? I am missing something important?
Best Regards,
Valerio
Hello Valerio,
have you also looked in the PAM (https://service.sap.com/pam/) ?
All the supported kernel releases with any OS / DB version is listed there.

After upgrading to 9.2 I would immediately let follow the upgrade to 10g (10.2.0.4) and use the kernel 46D_EX2 together with the new Oracle instantclient
Oracle 9.2 is already out of extended maintenance.
Check Note 1086956 - 46D_EX2 Kernels

Thanks for your reply.
I have already explored the product availability matrix very carefully, and I found the right new SAP kernel for my particular scenario:
SAP KERNEL 4.6D_EXT 64-BIT (ORACLE 9.2 64-BIT, AIX 5.3)
But my question is different. I was wondering why the procedure for a SAP kernel upgrade, or at least a link to the relevant documentation on this subject, is not included in the Oracle upgrade manual.
That's all!

Yes - I didn´t doubt that. I just said that 9.2 is out of (extended) support already - see Note 1110995 - Extended maintenance for Oracle Version 9.2

It´s just like every other kernel update - nothing changes:
- download SAPEXE and SAPEXEDB
- download all patches that have a creation date after that from the SAPEXE and SAPEXEDB files
- download brtools
- uncar SAPEXE and SAPEXEDB
- uncar brtools
- uncar the rest of the files
- stop your instance
- run "saposcol -k"
- copy old kernel directory
- move new kernel directory to new location
- run "slibclean" (cleans references to shared memory segments)
- run "./saproot.sh " (sets S-bit for saposcol and adapts s-bits for br*tools)
- if you had sapcrypto installed copy that from the old kernel directory
- start your instance
- run SGEN (since a new load format is introduced)
