document management in WPC

Hi,

I understand that KM can be used for document management related tasks like check out, check in, versioning etc. I would like to know if it is a good practice to manage the documents corresponding to a site in the Site Content folder of WPC. I personally feel this way the user will be able to easily locate and manage documents corresponding to a site easily. But I am not sure as to what could be the disadvantage or probable features of KM that I would end up losing if I follow this approach? Will it have any performance impact? Pls advice.

Also I would like to know if there are images corresponding to a site/sub-site is Site Content folder of WPC the best place to store or should it be stored in KM?

If the documents are uploaded in Site Content folder how can we get the Edit locally context menu when the user browses to a particular folder in Site Content where the document is located? This is because currently I will have to select the 'Details' context menu available and then chose 'Edit locally' option from the 'Actions' menu to check out a file.

Hi Vijaya,

The WPC has a specific purpose to serve in EP.i.e giving the user a good look n feel and well designed,organized contents.You can use WPC in External Facing Portal also but KM is not supported in Ext.facing Portal.If you use KM for a repository in an Ext.Facing portal it will definitely cause performance problem.I will recommend you study the same in SDN.

But if your portal is running in intranet then you can definitely use KM as your repository.

Indranil,

Are you trying to say that if the portal is hosted on Intranet we need to go for KM as a repository and NOT the Site Content folder present under a Site in WPC? Then what exactly is the need of Site Content folder?

Pls provide me the links in sdn related to performance issues in KM if it were to be an external facing portal?

Currently we may house the portal on Intranet, but it can be moved to Extranet and probably to Internet in later phases. Other than network latency why should accessing the KM repository have any problem?

Hi Vijaya,

WPC uses the SAP usage type EP with KM.

And KM is the content management ability provided by SAP.

When you create some thing in WPC like webpages and all, by default all those stored inside the SAP KM repository. Check for the \etc repository. There you can see the WPC contents.

Thats correct you can see the folder site content under WPC. But all those information stored in KM.

If you have created the sites in WPC, then those sites are by default available under the KM repository

KMcontent> \entrypoint> webcontent-->sites, cross sites content .
