Application Error on brbackup and brarchive

Former Member

Hi,

Our backup failes with no error message in the log. The backup status stays at "starting". The same status also shows in archive log.

Error below are reported in the server application event logs:

Faulting application brbackup.exe, version 6400.256.15.35965, faulting module orannts9.dll, version 9.2.0.2, fault address 0x0000000000004fb0.

I already triend replacing orannts9.dll from other servers with the same os and db version but the problem still exist.

I have also tried applying the latest brtools but the problem is still there.

We are in ECC5, Win Server 2003 Itanium, and Oracle 9.2.0.5.

thanks,

kbas

Dear K Bas

Just a thought. As you mentioned that other servers are also storing tehir backups on the same directory, can you please check if the said location has enough space to store new backups. Maybe the error might be caused because of low disk space.

Also the parameter backup_root_dir should point to the directory where you want the backup to be stored. It is currently poiniting to T:/oracle/DEV/sapbackup. This is the default setting. Change it to the directory where you have to store the backup files.

Hi,

I have already checked all of that before running the backup. All datafile are not in backup mode. I have also deleted the .lock.bra file from the archive and the backup directories before running the backup. The backup_root_dir is also pointing to the backup directory.

There is a consistent error message in the Windows Event Viewer.

Error Log entry 1:

Faulting application brbackup.exe, version 6400.256.15.35965, faulting module orannts9.dll, version 9.2.0.2, fault address 0x0000000000004fb0.

Error Log entry 2:

Faulting application tp.exe, version 6400.221.14.45770, faulting module orannts9.dll, version 9.2.0.2, fault address 0x0000000000004fb0.

Error Log entry 3:

Reporting queued error: faulting application tp.exe, version 6400.221.14.45770, faulting module orannts9.dll, version 9.2.0.2, fault address 0x0000000000004fb0.

I have already tried replacing the orannts9.dll but the error is still there.

Any more idea on what's causing this error?

thanks,

kbas

Where exactly is this T:/oracle/sapbackup directory on which you are trying to store the backup. Is it on network. Is the DB server able to reach the said directory, in the sense, it should be mapped on DB server. I still suggest try changing the backup_root_dir path.

Your archive files maybe in backup mode. Look for a file .lock.bra in /oracle/SID/oraarch. In case you find it delete it. Also check if your tablespaces are already in backup mode. In case, yes then through SQL command "Alter tablespace <tablespace name> end backup, make them come out of it. Try taking the backup again. Maybe this works.

Update BRBACKUP to latest patch level

patch Oracle 9 to 9.2.0.8 with latest opatch and run post-processing scripts after.

Former Member

Hi

The backup_root_dir is pointing to the correct backup directory (t:\oracle\ADE\sapbackup). Drive T is a network drive and this has been this way for 2 years now. Othe servers (Test and prod) are also saving the backup in the same network drive and both systems are okay.

Eric, I do not think updating oracle to 9.2.0.8 is the right solution because our Test and Production servers have the same version of oracle and patches and the backup is working on those systems.

This problem only started on november. It was running perfectly before that (for 2 years). There was no update on the OS and DB before this error occured.

Any more ideas?

thanks,

KBas

check on your disk if you can find a directory named found.000 on the root of the disk. if so, this means you had an NTFS corruption.

in your case, I would uninstall Oracle 9i and re-install again with all necessary Oracle patches. This would clear any kind of corruption.

Hi,

There is no found.000 in drive T and we have enough disk space to backup all servers.

SAP OSS reply says its because our oracle version is old already But I do not buy it because our other servers (Test and Prod) are using the same oracle version and both are okay.

thanks,

kbas

Hi,

May be you did not understood Oracle Support.

There are some facts:

1) Oracle ended its customer support for 9i some years ago

2) Oracle ended its "free" extended support for 9i last year.

Therefore, if you get an error that is not documented then, it does not matter that you do not get the error in a different machine with the same oracle version. You do not get support.

Cannot be reproduced and a bug will not be opened, because it is an old version

Former Member

Hi Fidel,

OSS still gave us support for 9i. In fact they remote connected (via WTS) to our server 2 times already to try to solve the problem.

Since they cannot resolve this problem, they then say that its because oracle was old.

rgds,

Karl

Maybe the OSS guys were a bit lazy, but Fidel is right. you are running an unsupported Oracle version, so, don't expect to get great support on it.
