Purpose of GTIN Prefix in Retail

Hi Experts,

Can you please help me in understanding the concept of GTIN Prefix? I understand we need to maintain the GTIN Category and need to assign a number range for this Catgeory. But What is the logic behind GTIN Prefix. As all the number with in the number range assigned to GTIN Category should be accepted without any error.
