APPRAISALS

What are appraisal templates. How do we create that in SAP. Cant we configure the requiremnet directly with the SAP delivered. I have configured in IMG by using appraisal catalog...spro->pd>appraisals>edit appraisal catalog. Is this not the right way. Please advice.I am new in PD.
