How is a specific assembly assigned to a production order for repair? The assembly cannot be added as a component of itself, nor does there seem to be a way to transfer an assembly from stock to the production order. In general, a single component would be removed and scrapped and then replaced. It seems incorrect to do a disassembly/reassembly process, since the components never actually are returned to stock. Documentation of the Special type production order for rework or repair seems at best to be sparse.
For a repair transaction I would suggest a two phase method:
1. In the first phase with a special production order I'd make a special item (may be called 'under repair') from the product.
2. In the second phase I'd make a special production order for the repair process, using as starting component the 'under repair' item and the necessary other components.
(If there is no 'under repair' item on the stock before the repair process, then the process will cover well the cost of repairing.)

The bean counters wish to record material and labor. You're reply seems to imply that you have the assembly on a production order, and just need to scrap a component and issue a replacement. While this is true, the question I asked is how to assign the assembly to the production order in ther first place. Say for instance, that we make a widget that runs on a battery, and that a few batches of those batteries have been shown to overheat and burst into flames. We want to replace those batteries, and keep track of the associated costs. So we need to take our inventory of completed widgets, issue them to a production order, perform the replacement, and complete back to stock. How do we created this type of production order, and how do we then move assemblies from stock to the order?

If you only need replace one component without other process, I think you may just need to issue that damaged component to reduce the inventory. In other word, there is no other change to the production order but only one part throw away.
