Data in Company xxxx is not maintained error

Hi,

I am getting the "data in company code xxxx is not maintained" error while creating controlling area and assigning the company code to controlling area.

Navigation: IMG->Enterprise Structure->Definition-> Controlling->Maintain Controlling Area

Could you please clarify this issue and what setting should be changed and where.
