I guess you are talking about the functional upgrade of SAP system.
Functional upgrade : Is built on the technical upgrade, the functional upgrade provides in addition the opportunity to implement new functionalities in area like FI,HR,Logistics ..,this upgrade type also represents an opportunity to maximize the use of SAP standard functionalities by replacing custom modifications and consolidate instance or systems.
As a functional consultnat you will be supposed to understand the additional functionalitite vailable in the higher version of the SAP product to which you are upgrading. Also you are supposed to have an understanding of the upgrade roadmap available in solution manager, if at all solman is being plannned to be used. Testing of the newn system will also be in your domain for the functionalitities. Lastly you will be required to train the core tem/end user on the enhanced functionalitites.
It is assumed that there will technical consultants in your team as upgrade has a major chunk of technical work associated with it.
