    RFC Lookup :

Its just like value mapping function. In value mapping, the table used for value mapping will be stored in XI itself; and its not the best practice to change the value mapping table frequently. If any values keep on changing, then u can maintain the table in R3 Side, or in ABAP stack of XI and u can refer that table during mapping and pass on to the receiver. For example if you need a employee name of a partiuclar person whose employee number is coming from the sender. In this case, you need to pass the employee number to the RFC lookup and get the employee name. Initially you need to maintain a table in R3 side and create a RFC with import parameter with employee number and export parameter as employee number. Then you need to create a RFC Communciation channel to use it for Lookup. Then through the standard code (you can get it in help.sap.com) in your mapping to retrive the values. The main advantage of using RFC lookup is that all the system related parameters like user id, password, etc can be maintained Communciation channel itslef and no need to pass anything through the code in mapping.

Similar way you can do the lookups for JDBC as well as for RFC. From PI 7.1 onwards, this funtionality comes along with Graphical mapping itslef, meaning that no need to code anything for lookup.

    Hope this helps.
