Two points:
A. If two material type is same in screen selection, value/quantity update etc field, it will can be changed regarding to exist open PO, accounting or not.
B. If two material type is different in screen selection, value/quantity update etc field, you have to clear all open PO, available stock, accounting etc, then you can change material type.

hi
Material Type can be changed subject to following conditions
Old & new type must be assigned to same account category
No open PO , Stocks ,reservation etc.
now check the material type views for both material types they should be same
u can use MMAM for material type change or use MMZ2

this will be the case if u have any open pos
but if u dont have any open pos then u can do it without any restriction of acct cat

Sir,
Its not possible tha one matcode having 2 diffrent materil types..
The material type should be unique for all the plants in single company code..
For changing material type..
The validations are..
1.Pl delete all the pending GRN's,PO,PR's..
2.Pl perform material to material stock transfer using MB1B/309
3.After all i dont think it will effect for account assignments..
Use transaction MMAM
Menu: - Logistics > Material Management > Material Master > Material > Change Material Type..
