Dear all,

Currently we are using SAP R/3 4.7 on HP-UX with RDBMS oracle 9i. As we know, oracle 9i is out of support so now we want to upgarde it. Can u suggest me some questions relarted to this...

1. How much down time it will require for successfull upgardation from 9i to 10g or 11g?

2. We should go for 10g or 11g?

3. Will the oracle software chargeable from SAP service marketplace site as we already have license for R/3 and oracle 9i from SAP?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Ankit Gupta

Hello Ankit,

> 1. How much down time it will require for successfull upgardation from 9i to 10g or 11g?

It will depend on problems, your skill and the hardware. In normal i would suggest to estimate round about 2 hours, if you have already prepared some things.

> 2. We should go for 10g or 11g?

You could only go for Oracle 10gR2. Oracle 11g is not supported yet and as far as i know from the oracle development update - the first release that will be supported will be Oracle 11gR2.

Yes

Please also check the PAM, if your kernel supports Oracle 10g.

Hi

Recently we have done an upgrade from Oracle 9i R2 to Oracle 10g rel2 ( patch 10.2.04 )

Answering to your questions :

1. For the planning , please perform the same in the Sandboxes first. The process will be that you bring down SAP, perfrm a database upgrade , and then bring SAP up again.

For the DB upgrade , please go though the documented process and have all the requirements ready before doing the same in the Production System as it involves lots of Unix intervention.

In the sandbox , it took us a lot of time , however the expertise developed helped us in doing the Production upgrade in about 2-3 hours.

2. No , please upgrade to 10gr2 only now. it is well supported by Oracle and SAP

3. There will no extra charge for upgrading to oracle 10gr2 if you are having Licensed Oracle 9i software. U can get the CD's through Metalink SR .

Let me know if u need more information

1. How much down time it will require for successfull upgardation from 9i to 10g or 11g?

Downtime mainly depends upon on the many constraints like server performance, database condition, your knowledge on oracle. It has2 steps

1. Pre upgrade procedures

2. Database upgrade

3. Post upgrade procedures

In pre upgrade procedures,we will be executing some SQL scripts and store thes results. Once the upgrade is completed, in the post upgrade procedures we will execute the same SQL scripts and compare both the results.

2. We should go for 10g or 11g?

SAP Recommends to user Oracel 10G Release 2, there no SAP release available for Oracle 11G.

3. Will the oracle software chargeable from SAP service marketplace site as we already have license for R/3 and oracle 9i from SAP?

I dont think so, can check with account manager.

Hope it helps
