MaxDB (and former SAPDB and former ADABAS) is and was supported on cluster environments.

Are you planning to run a SAP installation or an external application?

Hi,

this is exactly what Markus was talking about.

You may use the built-in functionality of MaxDB to run a high avalability cluster. I think the book you've read was about the cluster mechanism like Oracle provides with load-balancing and so on. MaxDB does not provide such cluster operations.
