BPM is not sending out an email

I am attempting to use the Emial Notification Action in my BPM process. The email is not being set. I have ensured that the values are configured according to the documentaiton, found here: https://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw73ehp1/helpdata/DE/e4/32ff7865fa483dba3686160f5c6dd0/frameset.htm

Where might the possible errors be captured or how can i verify that BPM does at least attempt to send an email?

It looks like the emails are being sent but with a substantial delay of several hours. What could be the cause?
