The main purpose of this BADI is to enrich or process additional details on the catalog data during the creation time, updation of catalog (items, categories, schemas and before mapping).
Thus if you have any custom requirements (which is not part of the standard CCM process) that are to be carried during the aboved listed activities; then you can implement this BADI to achieve them.
The BADI documentation has very detailed explanation. Goto transaction SE18 -> provide the BADI name and click display. Then you can find a button called Documentation at the top. Click that to get the details.
