Customization copy from ECC Prod to Dev

Hi gurus,

There is a complaint from our BI team that so much of customization was directly made in QA in the early phases of the SAP Implementation Project and this was not re-developed in DEV and moved to QA and Production. This has resulted in loss of customization in development and is not suitable for Unit and Product testing.

To put Prod and Dev in sync with customizing, I propose to export Prod / QA client 100 (with SAP_CUST profile) and import into DEV client 100. What are your views on

the best practices

technical feasibility

client security implications

Thanks for your help.

Regards,

Abdul

    Read :

    Remote client copy:

Also, you can think about the option of client export/import (SCC8)

    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_erp2005vp/helpdata/EN/69/c24c824ba111d189750000e8322d00/frameset.htm

    > technical feasibility

The same product is installed, with the same release, in both systems.

All components in these systems, including add-ons, have the same development status.

    > client security implications

SAP_CUST only copy customizing data. so, there is no risk of misusing production data as in case of system refresh.

In the post given above, you already have the technical procedure to do the needful.

However, as a best practice it is generally not done as it would mean loss of new developments made after go-live.

Also, I can forsee problems during the import if there were major code changes made in development after the golive especially code that refers to config.

If its feasible(time and resource wise) you might want to copy your development into a new system and try out the production client export/import into the newly created system.

    • Hi,

If you do a client copy, all customizing in target client will be lost so you could try creating a new client in DEV and do the Client Copy with customizing but one question here, are you sure is only client dependant customizing or there is also client independent customizing and/or workbench objects?.

If only client dependant customizing and client independant customizing you could use remote client copy, if workbench objects are part of the changes done in QA then I will recomend you to create a custom transport route from PRD to DEV, this is not the best practices but it works fine as you will get the workbench programs modified or created in QA to DEV system and then all systems will be equal.

Other way is to copy system from QA to DEV.

      Good luck and merry christmas!!
