Resetting Agreement number in contract - ME32K

Hello, I have a contract with 4284 lines. I mistakenly added another line by changing line (agreement number) number to 94285. So now all the below lines become 94286, 94287, 94288 ...etc. I was not aware that SAP allow line item to be changed. Now I have to manually change the line item to 4286, 4287 ... etc when I add new item into the contract which is really error prone. I tried by deleting the line 94285 but it always keeps the next of this number although I inserted 4286...

Is there any way to reset the line to 4 digit number or any way to fix this problem?

Thank you for your help.

I think SAP is just looking at the highest item number and adds the interval from customizing to determine the next number, so it would not be possible to get this problem solved as the item is never removed physically (and please don't do it)

How many items do you expect finally? What is the logic to even touch the item numbers? I would hesitate to create documents with that many items, they are unmanageable, they might take forever to open and to locate the right item to monitor the status etc etc

Thanks Jurgen for your reply. Sad to hear that it is not solvable :(. Normally we reach up to 7 to 8 thousand lines, and then create another one with same vendor. Touching the item number was totally inadvertent. Now, I have to manually change the line number for each material I add into the contract. It was ok if I am the only one maintaining this contract, basically there are other people across company need to change or add new items into the contract too which made this issue bigger and it's difficult to get rid of this contract number now.

Is there any way to make line item number unchangeable to avoid unintentional changes?
