Material Number Length

Hi all,

Have came across a typical challenge. The client wants material number of 25 character as it has its legacy system of 25 char.

We had suggested that to store legacy number into a different field and use internal numbers, but is not acceptable to the client.

Is it anyway to increase the length in all areas of SAP.

Please help.

Hi,

Standard SAP allows only 18 characters. You cann't extend as per your requirement.

If your legacy system has 25 characters then you should consider only 18 characters which is important from client point of view & can adopt the same in Material master creation in SAP.

see this is the phase of cleaning the garbage i.e. you have the insist to client to that this is what SAP offer, beyond this its not, and i am sure client will modify their BP.

there are some options, please check OSS notes 78093 and 400062.

However, better dont go this way, you client will not be happy, as you will get problems in many many areas, and it will increase the project costs, as you would have to change many many reports as material numbers longer than 18 cannot be shown, do not fit in exisiting reports and forms ....

For long description SAP has provided 40 characters you can use that .

Max length for a matl no. is 18 chars only. You can't go beyond that in Stadard SAP.

Thru Technl. development, it can be extended.

In std sap system, the lenght is fixed to 18....And you can't increase it...

You cannot change the standard character length of the material No. as according to SAP material no is a not a description but a Number to identify the material in short.
