    Hi:

Stock Transfer is the physical movement of material from one location to another location, stock transport order is one way of doing the stok transfer.

Stock can be transfer between plant to plant, company code to company code, storage location to storage location.

However there are different procedures for stock transfers:

1.Stock Transfer using one step procedure: Here Goods issue and Goods receipts happens in single step.

2.Stock Transfer using Two stage procedure:The two-step procedure allows you to monitor the stocks in transit. After the goods issue is posted at the issuing point, the stock appears "in stock transfer" at the receiving point and is managed as such in the system.

    3.Stock Transport Order:

This is transfer of material from one plant to other plant or co.code to co.code via SD route.

Here a.receiving plant raise the stock transport order on issuing plant.

    b. Issiuing plant creates the outbounmd delivery against STO and PGI.IF it is in India, then excise

    invoice creation.

    c. Receiving plant post the goods receipt against outbound delivery and post the excise ivoice.

    d. Invoice verification.

The main advantage of Stock Transport order is you have a more control because you can have purchasing document behind itand you can check the PO history which would gives all the details for Delivery as well GR documents.

However ftor STO via SD you need to configure the set up stock transport order in MM >Purchasing >Purchase Order-->Set Up Stock Transoport order.

Also on a data maintanace side you need to maintain the custmor and vendor relations.

    Hope this would helps you.

    Cheers

    Rahul

    Awards plz.if helpful.

    Hi,

    In my opinion:

    - in case of stock transfer you directly post the goods movement w/o any document behind it (exceptions are reservations)

    - in case of STO the process has more control because (at least) there's a purchasing document behind it (e.g you can check the PO history), you can create delivery document as well

Please check the advantages of STO in SAP online help:

A goods receipt can be planned in the receiving plant.

You can enter a vendor (transport vendor) in the stock transport order.

Delivery costs can be entered in the stock transport order.

The stock transfer order is part of MRP: Purchase requisitions that were created in MRP can be converted into stock transport orders.

The goods issue can be entered using a delivery via Shipping (LE-SHP).

The goods receipt can be posted directly to consumption.

The entire process can be monitored via the purchase order history

    Stock Transfers

    1. Physical movement of material

    2. Transfers can use a one-step or two-step procedure, or a transport order

    Transfer Posting

    1. A change in stock type, or material number

    2. Generally, no physical movement occurs

    Hi Meena,

The difference b/w the stock transfer and stock transport order is,

    STOCK TRANSFER:

A stock transfer is the removal of material from one storage location to another storage location. Stock transfer can takes place within a same plant or b/w two plants within the premises.

    STOCK TRANSORT ORDER:

A stock transort order is the trasfer of material from on plant to another plant (which is outside the premises or outside the city or state.) Here we aplly the conditions like freight, etc.

    With Regards,

    Bhaskar.

    hi,

    Differences-

1)Stock transfer (transfer posting) is for movement of goods within plant basically.

STO is for from one plant to another plant always.u can not use STO from transfering from one storage locn to another storage locn within Plant.

    2)Processes alltogther are diff.

3)If transfer posting is within Plant no account entries.

For STO it always involves the valuation change at plant level.

    e.g.

if say u want to transfer quality stock to unrestricted, there will be no accounting entries.

but u cannt transfer the same through STO.

scenariowise u can find lot of differences.Again u can map STO through transfer posting also.

    regards,

    sujit

    Hi

There are three different procedures for carrying out a stock transfer:

Stock transfer via stock transfer posting using one-step procedure

Stock transfer via stock transfer posting using two-step procedure

Stock transfer using stock transport order

    a. STO without delivery

    b. STO with delivery via shipping

    c. STO with delivery and billing/invoice
