Creating new charactersitic - which BW Application to assign?

Former Member

Dear All,

I am creating a new characteristic in APO using the RSA1 transaction. After I've provided the name and the description, the system pops a window with following message:

Several BW changes are active in this system.

To which BW application should the object belong?

BW

APO

Which of the above options should be chosen?

What the implications?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards,

Rimjhim Jain

Hi,

Is there a significance behind chosing APO? What's the impact if I chose BW?

Also the same question is asked while creating Key Figures? Should I chose APO for Key Figures as well?

Thanks,

Rimjhim

Hi Rimjhim,

APO keyfigures are editable, fixable in APO planning area where as BW are only readable. It does not make much difference with the characteristics the same time except for the data type.

refer to this[post|] for more details. There are several posts in this forum about this issue.

Hi Visu,

almost all the replies prefer APO as the type while creating Characteristics or Key Figures. But one reply in one of the posts says to use BW as a thumbrule.

Need to know which one do you use and have you faced any problems with it?

Thanks,

Hi,

Rule of thumb, for any key figures that you use in any cube or load data and keep read only in APO, use BW key figures, if you want to edit or fix the values in APO planning book, use APO keyfigures. The same kind of rule applies to characteristics. If you use in cube, use BW characteristics and if in APO planning book, use APO ones. For characteristics I see no real difference if it is BW or APO object.

Thanks,

What are the drawbacks if I just make all the KFs and Chars as APO by default? Suppose I am not sure that I want to fix them, and a need to fix arises later on. In that case I may want all of them to be APO type.

Is there any performance issue if all are made of type APO?

Hi,

I don't think there would be any performance issues..but you are allowing edit in keyfigures that you really don't want to edit like oyu r past history that you load from cube to APO planning area.

You can say that I will restrict editing in planning book...that's up to you. But that's the practice. Never tried to create all APO objects in my past implementations..as it would be a headache to replace the keyfigure latter.
